The turn of season is upon us. Spotty Mackeral are still on the chew in the bay. Look near the rous channel or north of harry's in the paddock. Good size snapper will be starting to turn up, check out around peel artifical. First light or sundown always the best. Jew are also about in the same areas.
Good mud crabs have been caught in the estuaries after the rains have helped to flush them out.
The next wave of Sandy's should be upon us anytime in the southern bay.

Congratulations to all the anglers whom participated in the  Moreton Bay Game Fishing Club "Back to Tanga 8" held early March.

Moreton Bay GFC wrapped up its annual GARMIN “Back 2 Tangas 8” tournament with 12 juniors, 6 senior female and 75 senior male anglers on 31 boats. It was one of the best turnouts for a “Back 2 Tangas” event.
There was a great offshore bite wide of Cape Moreton saw most boats getting 7-9 strikes on blues, stripes and black marlin. Also on Saturday an improved light tackle black marlin bite occurred inshore, with Dragon Lady going 4 from 9 off Deep Tempest, with others hooked of the Cape and in the Trench. Capt. Russell Caporn’s Kaizen put on a spectacular display with 7 from 10 over the two days fishing including 4 from 6 on blues on Day 1 (blues x 2 to Lachlan, 1 to Ben Kelly and 1 to Ethan Harrington which was a first of species for him). On Day 2 there were off to a quick start with start fishing at 0700 and their first tag at 0723 (black marlin). Adding a stripe for Ethan (another first) and a blue as well for the grand slam and back to back wins!
A tournament highlight was Ryan Thomson landing a 26.8kg Black marlin on 8kg line, fishing on Makaira, which is being lodged as a Small Fry Pending QGFA record.
The final wrap was: 104+ strikes, 92 Hook-ups and 65 fish tagged or landed. There were 26 blue marlin, 13 black marlin, 3 striped marlin, 1 sailfish, 22 other gamefish.

         Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race        

The sixty seven year history of the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race has made it one of Australia’s flagship offshore yacht races.
It is an icon of Queensland and the highest profile Easter Weekend sporting event, setting sail from Moreton Bay on Good Friday annually.
The sixty eighth edition of this 308 nautical mile ocean classic will start on Good Friday, March 25 2016. From the start, yachts proceed via a mark off Redcliffe Point to the North West Channel up to Caloundra and through to Gladstone.
Entrants will include the countries best Queensland based race boats as well as interstate rivals. In 2015, Queensland Racer ‘Black Jack’ took an impressive double winning both line honours and topping the timesheets on handicap to win the prestigious Courier Mail Cup, one of the oldest perpetual trophies in Australia that has been competed for on a continual basis.

           Holiday Anchorages        

Holiday Anchorages

We have been asked by a number of people for some "quiet alternative anchorages" for over the holiday periods when the popular anchorages of Horseshoe Bay and Tangalooma will be packed with holiday traffic.



Here are some alternatives. References here are for anchorages as numbered by the Beacon to Beacon guides and coincide with the aerial photos of the same number in the back of the guide.

Instead of Tangalooma, which will be packed behind the wrecks, try Lucinda Bay (also called South Tangalooma) a mile to the south, its always quieter and often has less roll, or anywhere along the beachfront north of Tangalooma in the bay between Cowan and the Bulwer Wrecks.

The big Sandhills are a great place too, locally called Kounangai (84) but the Blue Hole a little further south is often much quieter but needs some tide to get in for deep draft vessels. (85)
One of the best anchorages in the Bay, with crystal clear water and a diversity of sea life, is Days Gutter at the southern tip of Moreton. Access can be difficult and tide dependant, but worth it. (86) Watch for dugongs.

Horsehoe Bay (105) may have clear water and white sandy beaches but it will be packed. For less traffic not far away have a look at One Mile and Myora (102) north of Dunwich, or Deambilla Bay just to the south. (108). Small boats can access the Wallum Pool at high tide for a very secure night north towards Amity (97) and good holding and peace and quiet can be found at Amity itself, with a netted swimming enclosure on the beach, a park with BBQs and only a short walk to shops and some casual dining. There can be a lot of tide run here so anchor securely.

Further down to the south is Blakesleys (113), with National Park camping and a sandy beach also the little visited Prices Anchorage (117). Crabbing can be good around this area. Perulpa Bay (116) on the easternside of Macleay Island is also little visited and has good protection and plenty of depth.

In a South easterly the anchorage (115) on the NW tip of Macleay island offers good shelter, has a nice beach for swimming plus a boatramp and shop nearby.
Canaipa Point (123) is very sheltered and has a large sandhill to amuse the kids.
Across the bay, a little known anchorage lies against the western shore of Green Island, just a few miles from Manly Boat Harbour. (98)

At the northern end of the bay the Bribie Passage offers a few alternatives with the best off the Welsby Lock entrance a mile or so north of anchorage (74) which can be rolly on the flood tide. If you can fit under the bridge (5.0m clearance high water) then its a nice trip up the passage to either the Stockyards (72) or Mission Point (71).

In a south easterley, anchorage 76 off the NW side of Scarborough is tenable and only a short dinghy trip to the boat harbour and some great food at Morgans Seafood or the Boat Club.

      Raby Bay Marina  News    

Raby Bay Marina PTY LTD is under new ownership.
They have hit the ground running with an immediate upgrade to essential systems, including new security access control and CCTV Camera monitoring of the marina and carparks.
Upgrades to new fendors and rubbers on the fuel dockand a complete clean to the walkways and pontoons. Further improvements will be rolled out over the coming months.

The same great management team is still in place. 

Marine Queensland makes way for new BIA

The former Queensland industry association, Marine Queensland, was formally wound up at its final AGM.
This was immediately followed at the same meeting by the election of a new regional council to represent Queensland as part of an expanded Boating Industry Association.
With the addition of Queensland, the former BIA of NSW and SA will now be known simply as the Boating Industry Association. New national CEO, Howard Glenn, who chaired the meeting, said the response of members at the meeting was very positive with participation from many of the major industry players in the region.
In its final year of operation, Marine Queensland posted significant financial losses due partly to a fall in membership numbers and lower boat show revenue. With the winding up of the association, all outstanding liabilities are expected to be met in full.
The new state branch currently has no permanent office nor staff although former staff member, Jenny Bellaver, has been acting as the point of contact for Queensland members.
Members at the meeting were also updated on plans for BIA-organised boat shows in 2016 which now include the Brisbane Boat Show alongside Sydney and Adelaide.
As a result, the Brisbane show will be given a complete make-over, including new dates and a new venue, in order to re-establish its position as a major regional drawcard for the local boating industry.
